Practices to Adopt While Brushing Your Teeth

Brushing teeth is a pretty straightforward task. It comes to us naturally as we clean our teeth twice a day. And yet, many people are devoid of the knowledge that could promote their oral health and make their teeth healthier.

Here are a few brushing practices you should adopt for the best results.

Start By Flossing

Before you reach for your toothbrush, grab the dental floss next to it. While flossing isn’t a substitute for brushing, it is a highly recommended dental hygiene practice. Dentists recommend flossing once a day to remove food particles and bacteria stuck between the teeth.

You can decide whether you want to floss in the morning or at night. Either way, floss before brushing your teeth to prepare them for the gentle bristle action. Use good quality dental floss to target all the hard-to-reach areas. Here’s what you need to do:

Rinse your mouth with some clean water. Next, slide the dental floss between your teeth and gently rub it against the teeth. Keep doing this until you’ve covered all the teeth. Rinse your mouth again and get ready to brush!

Use the Right Brushing Techniques

Your brushing technique plays a huge role in your oral health. How you hold the toothbrush and use it within the mouth affects your teeth and gum health.

Dentists recommend tilting the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to clean the gum line more efficiently. While brushing, use gentle strokes and move your toothbrush back and forth. Make sure to brush the outer surfaces first and then gently scrape the inside surfaces. You should also brush your tongue to remove the bacteria on it and reduce your chances of having bad breath.

Choose the Right Toothbrush

The type of toothbrush you use also impacts the health and hygiene of your teeth. A toothbrush that’s too large or small wouldn’t get the job done properly. You’ll struggle to target all the areas inside the mouth and have to hold the brush at odd angles. Similarly, a toothbrush with hard bristles can injure your gums and teeth.

Make sure you choose a toothbrush you can easily manoeuvre inside your mouth. It should also have soft bristles.
